Menopause- A Common Cause of Hair Loss in Women

hair lossThe transitional period of menopause that every woman experiences is one of the most common causes of hair loss in women.  A woman's body undergoes significant hormonal changes during menopause.  Fluctuating levels of estrogen and a variety of androgens are the most likely culprits of the hair loss and hair thinning that menopausal woman may experience.  According to Yahoo! Health, one androgen in particular, dihydrotestosterone, "shortens the hair growth cycle, leads to the growth of thinner and shorter hair, and delays the formation of new hair to replace the ones that fall out".

Fortunately, there are solutions available that will help mitigate the symptoms of hair loss and thinning.  A healthy diet is particularly important during menopause.  A diet that includes sufficient amounts of protein, iron, B vitamins, sulfur, vitamin E and essential fatty acids will help support the body's ability to properly nourish and grow hair.  During the transitional phase of menopause, women may also find it helpful to use extra gentle measures with their hair by avoiding excessive styling, twisting, pulling and the use of harsh chemical processing procedures.

Applying the topical treatment minoxidil, is an excellent choice for women who want to stop any further hair thinning.  Minoxidil also helps to stimulate the growth of new hair.  A 2% minoxidil solution of this FDA-approved product is typically recommended for menopausal women.  With consistent use and a little patience, women should experience a gradual reduction in hair thinning and an increase in new hair growth.
